I've long been inspired by the life sciences and have a background in scientific editorial work. At FEBS, my roles have spanned communications, website development, event organization and more – all aimed at improving the services FEBS offers the molecular life science community.

I obtained my PhD in plant molecular biology from the University of Nottingham and have spent the past 30 years in science publishing. I've worked for various journals, including Nature and Trends in Biochemical Sciences, and also edited many books. I was the Executive Editor of FEBS Open Bio from its launch in 2011 until 2019.

Dr. Inmaculada Yruela graduated and earned her doctorate in Chemistry at the University of Sevilla (Spain). She has been a visiting guest scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion in Mülheim an der Ruhr (Germany) and at Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Indiana University School of Medicine (USA). She is research scientist at the CSIC and group leader at Computational and Structural Biology in Estación Experimental de Aula (CSIC), Zaragoza (Spain). From the early 1990s she has been studying the relationship between the structure and function of proteins, and more recently the role of intrinsic ductiliity and plasticity of proteins in organismal complexity, multicellularity and evolution. She has led science outreach projects. She is currently member of SEBBM committee.

SIB Sezione Giovani is the Junior Section of the Italian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SIB). It was set up in 2020 to support the career development and networking opportunities of students and young researchers in the molecular life sciences in Italy. With about 5200 members from institutes of higher education, research centers and industry the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM) is the leading body of bioscience experts in Germany. Steeped in tradition the GBM can look back on a long history reaching back to the nineteenth century. Its work focuses on one of the most dynamic and promising research fields of our time: the molecular biosciences in all of its manifestations like biochemistry, molecular biology, and molecular medicine. The GBM hosts scientific meetings and conferences including the annual Mosbacher Kolloquium, the biennial GBM Fall Meeting and the GBM study group conferences. It supports students and the next generation of scientists, confers awards and honors, and takes part in trade fairs and conferences. The GBM represents the interests of all who work and research in the dynamic and promising disciplines combining chemistry, medicine, and biology – from first year students to heads of institutes, from junior scientists to Nobel Prize winners – and promotes research and teaching, the implementation of scientific findings in biotechnology and medicine, and their publication. The international GBM meetings are a platform for sharing information on the latest developments in molecular biosciences with leading experts on the represented sectors. The network of contacts extends to all German universities and a large number of major research centers.

Launched in 2011, FEBS Open Bio is an online-only open access journal for the rapid publication of research articles in molecular and cellular life sciences in both health and disease. The journal's peer review process focuses on the technical soundness of papers, leaving the assessment of their impact and importance to the scientific community.

Dr. Isabel Varela-Nieto graduated and earned her doctorate in Chemistry, Biochemistry Section, at the University Complutense of Madrid (Spain). She has been a visiting guest scientist at the Medical Schools of Uppsala (FEBS Fellow, Sweden) and San Diego (MEC Sabbatical, USA). She is Professor of Research at the CSIC and group leader at the CIBER of rare diseases (CIBERER, ISCIII) in Madrid. From the early 1990s she has been studying hearing neurobiology and IGF-1 actions. She was the first Chair of the SEBBM Science for Society working group with which she actively collaborates, and member of the FEBS Network working group. She is currently the president of the SEBBM, a member of the FEBS Science and Society Committee and of the ISC Finances Committee.
