The FEBS Junior Section Room is an online space in the FEBS Network created to support the interaction of students and young researchers of the FEBS Constituent Societies. The Room is open to everyone and you are encouraged to become a member to help with networking.

About the FEBS Network

The FEBS Network is an online international forum for those working in the molecular and cellular life sciences, enabling them to connect, collaborate and share advice, news and information. Learn more about the features of the FEBS Network.

About Rooms in the FEBS Network

Rooms on the FEBS Network are areas of the site created for a particular use and/or group of users. Rooms can be open or private. The FEBS Junior Section Room is open, which means that anything published to the Room can be viewed by everyone (i.e., Room members and contributors, other FEBS Network members, and people who are not registered on the site).

Visitors to the Room can view content via the Activity tab (or filter by the Posts, Videos and Documents options under the Content tab). They can also view a list of people who are members and contributors of the Room in the directories (under the Members and Contributors tabs).

If you become a member to the Room your name, affiliation and other information will be listed in the members directory, which can help when connecting with others. To become a member of the Room you also need to have a profile on the FEBS Network.

If you are registered you can:

  • Choose to receive updates on activity in the Room by setting up an email digest that covers this Room
  • Follow individuals so that you receive a notification when they create content
  • Add comments to content
  • Have open conversations with others in the room, via the Conversations tab
  • If invited as a contributor, add posts, videos and PDFs to the Room

The Room directories

The Room directories will list the FEBS Network profiles of participants who have joined the Room. The Room has a members and a contributors directory. The list of participants displays information such as name, country, institution, position and research interest.

The list can be searched and can also be filtered by fields such as country and research interest. This search and filter functionality is one reason why it is important to add as much information as possible to your FEBS Network account profile (for example, the Social column of the directory links to the participant social media accounts).

How to add content to the Room

Only contributors can post content to the Room. If you want to become a contributor, get in touch with the FEBS Junior Section.

To create a post, click 'Create a post' from the Create menu on the top header bar. Add a title, introduction and text to your post and format the body text as needed. You can insert images, tables and media, add links and special characters, and – if you are familiar with it – insert HTML code.

You can add a 'poster image' that will appear at the top of the post. You can download free images from sites such as Unsplash and Pixabay. They should be at least 1280 x 960 pixels, landscape orientation (horizontal), and be in JPG (for photos) or PNG (for images with text) format.

Use the Save button regularly, followed by 'Preview' to check your post. When you are happy, select the ‘FEBS Junior Section’ (under 'Room' from the right panel) as the destination for the post and click publish now. If you make a mistake you can edit your post after it has been published. You can also unpublish it or change the publication date (for example to republish an older post).

You can also upload PDFs or videos from the Create menu. Select the right option and then click on either New document or New video. Once again select the ‘FEBS Junior Section’ (under 'Room') for your PDF or video to appear in the Room when you click publish.

Room conversations

Room conversations allow group messaging of up to five people. They are accessible only to members and contributors in the room but are visible to everyone.

You can start a new conversation or reply within a conversation started by someone else, and you will receive an email notification when someone replies within a conversation you started. To get started, simply visit the Conversations tab in the room and join an existing conversation or start a new one. You can also use the green Start a Conversation button over the Room’s image or select that option from the Create menu.

Contacting others

Click on someone’s avatar or name to get to their profile page, and then you'll see two or three buttons to the right of their avatar giving different options for communication:

  • 'Contact', which shows only if an email address has been provided, opens a window to communicate via email.
  • 'Start Conversation', see section above. If you have an ongoing conversation with someone, the button will say Resume Conversation.
  • ‘Start Panel’ can be used for video call connection between individuals or small groups. You can share a screen during the call, but there is no chat tool currently. You can also start a video panel from the Create menu in the Room.

Please read and adhere to the FEBS Network community guidelines. If you have any queries or concerns get in touch with the FEBS Network Communications and Digital Platforms Associate.
