Gavin McStay (He/Him)

I am a molecular biophysicist applying single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy and advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques as well as tailoring new techniques and integrating with other experimental and theoretical techniques to study biomolecular interactions, structure, and dynamics in solution and the cell. I have been implementing my knowledge and experience in performing experiments to answer questions regarding various biomolecular systems, such as Adenylate Kinase, the bacterial transcription initiation complex, p53, the amyloid-beta peptide, alpha-synuclein, and more. Since I opened my lab in 2018, I have been interested in the molecular etiology of a group of diseases called Synucleinopathies (e.g., Parkinson's disease). My interests include, but are not limited to (i) the structure-dynamics-function relationship in intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs); (ii) phase-separated bio-condensates in health and disease; (iii) sensitive detection of bio-nanoparticles, such as viruses, exosomes, and IDP-based oligomers/aggregates.

Dr. Irene Díaz-Moreno is Full Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Institute of Chemical Research of the Scientific Research Centre Isla de la Cartuja – cicCartuja, in Seville (Spain). She was awarded with her Ph.D. with European mention from the University of Seville in 2005. Dr. Irene Díaz-Moreno has worked in collaboration with groups at the Universities of Göteborg (Sweden) and Leiden (The Netherlands) on molecular recognition between metalloproteins involved in electron-transfer processes. She was an EMBO postdoctoral fellow (2006–2008) at the NIMR-MRC in London (UK), working on the regulatory mechanisms of mRNA decay by RNA-binding proteins. In 2010, she got a permanent position at the University of Seville, where she is developing research projects on Biointeractomics field, as well as on the post-translational regulation of biological macromolecules.

I am a versatile, signal-centered biologist with broad scientific interests, driven by curiosity and motivated to take on new challenges. My work follows a continuous trajectory: from antiviral defence signalling in plants, through light-driven redox post-translational modifications and drought-induced flowering decisions, to my most recent and perhaps most captivating question: how inhaled nanoplastics affect mitochondrial function and signalling in the human lung?

I am a Professor of Toxicology, Biochemistry and Cell Signaling at Université Paris Cité (former Université Paris Descartes). I have completed my PhD in molecular toxicology and a post-graduate year in Bethesda, MD. I am the head of a Master degrees in toxicology and ecotoxicology. My research is based on cellular and animal models and on three main axes: 1) the influence of persistent organic pollutants on breast tumorigenesis and metabolic disruption, 2) the contextual role of pollutants in the occurrence of chronic liver diseases including steatosis and fibrosis, 3) the effect of mixtures on the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. I am involved in the development of innovative pedagogy methods and technics in order to improve transmission, acquisition, memorization and utilization of scientific knowledge by our biomedical students. I used flipped classrooms, quizzes (at home and during courses) and virtual reality to interact and immerge with students in and outside the classroom. Indeed, I developed with pedagogic engineers, 1) Home-based 45’’ Quizzes to engage students in regular learning modes and 2) serious games on cell signaling and xenobiotic stress. Together, with Etienne Blanc, Caroline Chauvet and Frédéric Dardel, I wrote several French books of biochemistry and toxicology topics for undergraduate students. I collaborate with several national and international institutes and universities (CNAM Thierry KOSCIELNIAK, Université de Strasbourg Jean-Luc SOUCIET, National University of Singapore, Fun Man FUNG...) for the development of innovative methods in teaching.

Ex-academia, now in MedComms. I write a blog called Total Internal Reflection about the human side of science. Postings are generally either opinion/commentary (either serious or silly) or "How To" pieces aimed at improving young scientists' soft skills.  A longer biography and manifesto are on the blog here.

I am an educator and researcher in the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology at Tallinn University of Technology. I teach biochemistry to undergraduate students and related courses to master’s students. I am fascinated by biochemistry, and one of the main challenges in my teaching is passing on a sense of awe at the complexity of even the simplest forms of life. My research focuses on lipid metabolism in health and disease, and I also have a broader interest in how the human body functions under extreme conditions, including exercise. Through practical experience, I have developed a strong interest in learning and teaching, as well as in improving educational practice. In my department, I have helped establish regular gatherings for teaching staff to share experiences and support one another’s teaching.

FEBS Letters is renowned both for its quality of content and speed of production. Bringing together the most important developments in the molecular biosciences, FEBS Letters provides an international forum for Reviews, Research Letters and Research Articles that merit urgent publication.

EMBL-EBI is international, innovative and interdisciplinary, and a champion of open data in the life sciences. We are part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), an intergovernmental research organisation funded by over 20 member states, prospect and associate member states. We are situated on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge, UK, one of the world’s largest concentrations of scientific and technical expertise in genomics.

Launched in 2011, FEBS Open Bio is an online-only open access journal for the rapid publication of research articles in molecular and cellular life sciences in both health and disease. The journal's peer review process focuses on the technical soundness of papers, leaving the assessment of their impact and importance to the scientific community.

I am the FEBS Events Associate – Advanced Courses, Congress, 3+ at FEBS, supporting the delivery of those events. Previously I was the Communications and Digital Platforms Associate, also at FEBS, and worked on platforms such as the FEBS Network and FEBS website. Before joining FEBS I managed the grant programmes of a number of UK research charities, mainly in the field of cancer, as well as supported the fundraising at those organisations. I also developed e-learning resources at the Institute of Cancer Research. I have a BSc in Biochemistry and an MSc in Nutrition. After years in London I have now moved back to Spain.

I've long been inspired by the life sciences and have a background in scientific editorial work. At FEBS, my roles have spanned communications, website development, event organization and more – all aimed at improving the services FEBS offers the molecular life science community.
