FEBS Junior Section present Nina Vesel

The next talk of the FEBS Junior Section in 2024 will host Dr Nina Vesel, from the University of Ljubljana Biotechnical Faculty, Slovenia. She will talk about genome plasticity in bacteria. The event will be on 9 May at 19:00 (CEST). Please help us share this post!

This talk is an activity from the FEBS Junior Section, an initiative set up by students and young researchers from some of the FEBS Constituent Societies. Each month members of the FEBS Junior Section organize an online event on either a research or a career topic. This talk was coordinated by Junior SBD (the junior section of the Slovenian Biochemical Society, SBD).

Speaker: Dr Nina Vesel, from the University of Ljubljana Biotechnical Faculty, Slovenia
Topic: “Genome plasticity in bacteria: from horizontal gene transfer to phage-driven genome rearrangements”
Time: 9 May 2024, 19:00 CEST

Nina Vesel is an alumna of Microbiology studies at the University of Ljubljana. She graduated in 2014 and then pursued her master’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, graduating with honors. From 2017 to 2022, she pursued her doctoral studies under the mentorship of renowned Prof. Melanie Blokesch at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne). Her doctoral dissertation focused on the natural competence of the pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii.

In 2023, Nina returned to Slovenia and joined the ERC Phagecontrol research group, led by Prof. Anna Dragoš. In December 2023, she was awarded the prestigious EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) postdoctoral fellowship. With Prof. Dragoš’s support, Nina is currently working on a postdoctoral project investigating interactions between temperate phages and host bacteria. Her research aims to understand how phages regulate specific host genes, not only at the bacterial population level but also within individual bacterial cells. Nina will introduce a new CRISPRi-seq method to identify key genes involved in phage-host interactions. Understanding these molecular mechanisms will enhance our ability to manage bacterial infections and improve bacterial control strategies.
