Currently Honorary Professor of the Free University of Brussels (ULB) Medical Faculty, Belgium. Besides 35 years of basic and translational medical research, I also spent 4 years in industry as head of the Molecular Biology lab at Baxter Healthcare research facility in Belgium. I spent 10 years supervising and managing Biochemistry wet labs and thereafter 15 years teaching Molecular Biology to medical, biomedical and veterinary students (BA2) but also to Biomedical Civil Engineers (MA1).I also supervised or co-supervised PhDs, MD clinician-researchers and 40 Biomedical and Medical Master's theses. I am currently President of the Belgian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have been with FEBS since 2003 as a member of the FEBS Education Working Group and then Committee, and after 2012 actively contributing to FEBS education activities such as presenting talks and workshops on various topics and YSF.

I spent 40 years teaching and researching, and developed a particular interest in education and career development. I chaired the Education Committee and was Careers advisor for the UK Biochemical Society. In these roles, and my work with students at the University of Manchester, I realised how important it is for young scientists to recognise their skills and be able to "sell" themselves to potential employers (and grant awarding bodies). I now run CV support sessions for young scientists on behalf of the FEBS Education Committee, of which I was a founder member.
I am at the end of my PhD (at least I hope ;-) ), focusing on melanoma in my research. As I have some food intolerances, I started to be very interested by dietetics and nutrition - and I am starting with a bachelor program in this field in September 2025.
Otherwise, I am a lot into dancing and sporting (climbing, hiking, snowboarding, running, yoga,...), I usually need a lot of physical activity, both indoors and outdoors. I am a scout and I love being in the nature. During my studies (and thanks to Erasmus), I've been living in Bergen (Norway), Rome, and Pisa (both in Italy).
Hi everyone! Like all of you, I'm also a passionate scientist, most attracted by the mysteries of biochemistry. I study antimicrobial resistance, search for novel active compounds, and determine their mechanism of action within the cell. This makes me the so-called "enzymologist" of our predominantly microbiological group.
As a person, I'm more of an introvert and a bit melancholic. I've always loved gardening and plants in general (I used to have a collection of over 40 carnivorous plants!). Like most Czechs, I also love walking in forests (and looking for fungi! :D ). I play tennis at an intermediate level and World of Warcraft at a high-intermediate level.
