Urgent appeal: the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) should help stop the massacre of civilians in the Gaza Strip by avoiding "double standard" policies

When Russia invaded Ukraine, FEBS took targeted measures against the Russian and the Belarusian Biochemical Societies, suspending any participation of their members in the organizational and scientific activities of FEBS. And, as far as I know, these measures are still in force today.

The question I ask myself now, and that I ask all FEBS members, is the following: what decision was taken by the Executive Committee regarding the Biochemical Society of a State, Israel, represented by a regime that, in response to a terrorist act, conducted a war of ethnic cleansing against the defenseless Palestinian people living in Gaza? What forms of pressure were used by the FEBS Executive Committee to force the Israeli Biochemical Society to distance itself from the war crimes committed by the Israeli government?

Past member of the FEBS Science & Society Committee

The current Israeli regime —well distinct from the democratic nation of Israel— has surpassed all moral boundaries in a military campaign directed against a defenseless civilian population, subjected to relentless bombardment and the agony of starvation.

It is imperative that international institutions take decisive action through appropriate means, making it unequivocally clear to the Israeli leadership that they are straying from the path of global understanding, diplomacy and morality. No one wishes Israel to become an isolated state, no one can bear the suffering of Gaza’s unarmed civilians to endure even a day longer.
