The current Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on all aspects of our societal life, including the relationship between how basic scientific research is actually carried out and what the public expects from it. The expectations and beliefs of the public are of extreme importance and they may inform political decisions impacting on research funding and direction; thus it is necessary that scientists try to inform the public on what can be realistically expected from basic research, and why it is irreplaceable.
The Italian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SIB) published an open contribution on this point, which can be reached on FEBS Letters at the link: https://febs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/1873-3468.13927
