On the 19^th of November 2024, FEBS Open Bio organised a webinar by Prof. Johannes Herrmann (University of Kaiserslautern) titled 'Mitochondrial Biogenesis: An in-depth look into the beating heart of the eukaryotic cell.' This event was held to accompany our recent 'In the Limelight' special issue on Mitochondrial Biogenesis.

Prof. Herrmann and contributing authors from the special issue explored the molecular mechanisms involved in the assembly and function of mitochondrial proteins. Together, they discussed current topics in mitochondrial research, including the role of the SAM complex in β-barrel protein assembly, the mitochondrial disulfide relay, and the distinct pathways of protein insertion into the inner mitochondrial membrane. Insights from the panel, paired with stimulating questions from attendees, led to an engaging discussion that highlighted the importance of these coordinated processes in maintaining mitochondrial function and the crucial role of mitochondria beyond energy production.
