FEBS Open Bio Webinar: Bioplastics and Biopolymers: A step closer towards environmental sustainability
On the 29th of September 2026, FEBS Open Bio hosted a free webinar titled "Bioplastics and Biopolymers: A step closer towards environmental sustainability". This event was held to accompany our recent ‘In the Limelight’ special issue on Bioplastics and Biopolymers and brought together leading researchers to explore the recent advances in the production, characterisation and biodegradation of sustainable alternatives to fossil-fuel derived plastics.
The session was chaired by Dr. Valeria Giosafatto (University of Naples Federico II, Italy), and featured contributions from authors of the special issue. Together, they discussed the diverse approaches being used to produce and degrade bioplastics and biopolymers, with a focus on how polymer architecture, enzyme stability, and the choice of raw materials can greatly impact both the durability and degradability of polymers. The panel also highlighted the importance of matching polymer mobility with enzyme stability for effective end-of-life, as well as the enormous opportunities for bioplastic design owing to the huge diversity of raw materials.
We thank all those who attended and invite you to explore our special issue on Bioplastics and Biopolymers to learn more.
