The FEBS Junior Section is organised by students and young researchers from some FEBS Constituent Societies. They develop joint activities, such as online talks and other events, and share resources, as well as open doors for young European scientists to opportunities outside their home countries by providing the relevant contacts and fostering communication within the network.

I became an MD in 1972, then decided to do research in biomedical sciences and received my PhD in immunology in 1978. I spent 3 years as a postdoctoral fellow at NIH, USA, then started a university carrier in Debrecen where became professor of biochemistry and molecular biology in 1988 at the Faculty of Medicine, then chairman of this department between 1993 and 2013. My research group has focused on molecular mechanisms in cell death, structure and function of transglutaminases with clinical implications, inflammation, differentiation and functions of white and brown adipocytes. I was visiting professor at the University of Texas and the University of Rome, coordinated major European projects of COST, ESF and EU-Frame Work programs. I was rector (1999-2001, 2007-2010) and president of the Medical and Health Science Center (2001-2007) of the University of Debrecen. Elected to chair the Hungarian Accreditation Committee for Higher Education (2004-2007), the Hungarian Biochemical Society (2005-2015) and became a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1998 where chaired the Science and Ethics Committee and currently chair the Biology Section of the Academy. In 2010 I was elected to be the member of the Committee on Science and Ethics of All European Academies (ALLEA) and participated in the drafting group of the recently published new European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity. . Since 2012 I chair the Publications Committee of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies and I am member of FEBS Executive Committee.

The FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE Conference is a joint initiative of FEBS, IUBMB, and several leading European biomedical research institutes (the ENABLE partners), building on a successful project originally funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme (2017–2020). These interdisciplinary, international, three-day events are organized by and for young researchers in the molecular life sciences and attract up to 300 participants from around the world. Each conference features a scientific symposium, a career day, and outreach activities. ENABLE (the European Academy for Biomedical Science) was launched in 2017 through the collaboration of four renowned European institutes: the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona, Spain), the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (NNF-CPR, Denmark), the Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences at Radboudumc (Netherlands), and the European School of Molecular Medicine (SEMM, Italy). These core institutions hosted the first four conferences from 2017 to 2021. In 2022, FEBS and IUBMB joined forces with the ENABLE founders to relaunch the initiative as FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE, expanding its reach and impact. In this new cycle, institutions can apply to become associated centres and host one of the events. 

The Austrian Society for Molecular Life Sciences and Biotechnology (ÖGMBT) is the largest Austrian association of scientists, students and companies active in molecular life sciences, biotechnology and related fields. The society represents the above-mentioned disciplines in their entire spectrum, from basic and application-oriented research to the implementation of research results. Therefore the ÖGMBT has a dense network of members with representatives from academia, industry and related fields. In view of the great importance of the life sciences for Austria as a science and business location, the ÖGMBT sees itself as a major shaping force in the Austrian research landscape.

The Hungarian Biochemical Society (HBS) is one of the eight founding members of FEBS. The aim of HBS is to support the work of Hungarian biochemists, molecular biologists and biotechnologists to increase the quality of research and education in molecular life sciences in the frame of universities and research centers of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. From the beginnings, HBS hosts regular meetings, methodological presentations and workshops, including three FEBS3+ conferences jointly organized with the Slovenian, Croatian and Serbian Societies. These provide the first opportunities for young researchers to present and critically discuss their results and to establish new professional relationships. HBS publishes the quarterly journal “Biokémia” including news and events of the Society, international scientific social issues, historical reviews and scientific publications. For over five decades, HBS significantly contributed to the work of FEBS committees and the editorial offices of its Journals and organized the 9th and 20th FEBS Meetings (1974, 1990) and the 30th FEBS Congress-9th IUBMB Conference (2015) in Budapest.
