This talk is an activity from the FEBS Junior Section, an initiative set up by students and young researchers from some of the FEBS Constituent Societies. Each month members of the FEBS Junior Section organize an online event on either a research or a career topic. This talk was coordinated by the HDBMB Junior Section (the junior section of the Croatian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, HDBMB).

Speaker: Karlo Skube, Selvita d.o.o., Zagreb, Croatia.
Topic: “From lab bench to business development: A molecular biologist’s journey in drug discovery”
Time: 12 December 2024, 19:00 (CET)
For more information: See the abstract and biosketch below, and the Selvita website.

Abstract/Biosketch

Karlo Skube is a molecular biologist with a dynamic career spanning both research and business in the field of drug discovery. Karlo began his academic journey at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. During his studies, he expanded his horizons through an Erasmus+ scholarship, spending a semester in Madrid, Spain.

After completing his master’s, Karlo pursued a PhD at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki in Finland. However, four years into his research, he realized that the academic setting wasn’t his ideal fit. He made the bold decision to pivot his career, returning to Zagreb, Croatia, where he joined Selvita, a leading early drug discovery contract research organization. Initially working as a scientist in the In Vitro Pharmacology department, Karlo quickly transitioned into a business development role for the North American market.

For the past year and a half, Karlo has been successfully bridging science and business, helping Selvita expand its reach and impact. His next exciting chapter? Relocating to Boston, Massachusetts, to further his professional journey and contribute to the vibrant life sciences ecosystem.

Whether you're a student contemplating your future, a researcher considering a career change, or simply curious about the intersection of science and business, this talk will offer practical insights, lessons learned, and inspiration to forge your own unique path in the ever-evolving field of drug discovery.
