Planning your 1st FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference

You now have a bit more time to get your abstract, CV and motivation letter ready for the 1st FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference: the deadline has been extended to the 28th August and we have secured more travel grants. Do not miss out!

On our second post about the 1st FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference we are keen to let you know about all the exciting developments we have had these last weeks!

First, get there...

Following the big interest in the 1st FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference (thank you to many early bird applicants that made it on time) and to offer the possibility of early bird discount to more people, we are extending the deadline for the early bird registration and travel grants to the 28th August. The early bird discounted registration (which includes the gala dinner with the keynote speakers) is 135 euro and travel grants (generously supported by FEBS, IUBMB and by our conference sponsors) are 300 euro for European applicants and €600 euro for overseas applicants.

But on top of those travel grants, HDBMB – the Croatian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology – will also offer 5 travel grants to Croatian young scientists who want to attend the 1st FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference. If you are a member of that Society, get in touch with them as soon as possible to see if you can benefit from those awards.

And IUBMB are widening the international reach of the event even further by supporting trainees from African countries. After awarding funding to trainees from Nigeria and South Africa to attend the Young Scientists’ Forum (YSF) at the IUBMB-FEBS-PABMB 2022 Congress, IUBMB was exploring more ways to support biomolecular scientists in Africa. On the back of a fruitful meeting between IUBMB President Alexandra Newton and President Elect Dario Alessi with the IUBMB YSF awardees, they decided to award five trainees from any African country with fellowships for up to $1,500 each to attend the FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE 2022 conference in Seville. This is part of their new IUBMB Africa initiative and an excellent way to show that the conference is a truly international event. Please share this information with institutions and teams to encourage young researchers from African countries to contact IUBMB about this opportunity.

...next, get acclimatized…

Seville is one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in Spain, so we are not going to let you get away without exploring it. And what better way to do it than to work your way through its beautiful barrios and vibrant bars, talking science with the locals? On Wednesday 16 November, ENABLE participants will attend ‘pub talks’ in the city center to engage the general public with key research topics. People from Seville are famous for being friendly and chatty, so this will be a fun activity for everyone involved, in any language you prefer!

And don’t forget that on Tuesday evening, before the event starts, you can join a tour of the city and of the Science Museum. This will be the perfect opportunity to pick up a few scientific words in Spanish. Let’s talk about ciencia and investigación!

Can’t wait? For those who have already registered and are planning their trip to Seville, we are updating our suggestions for accommodation and public transport options to the venue in the interactive map in our website. Stay tuned for more updates!

...then, get published!

We have been invited by FEBS Open Bio, one of the FEBS Press journals, to publish all accepted abstracts in a supplement after the conference. This means that abstracts appearing in the FEBS Open Bio supplement will be included individually in the Conference Proceedings Citation Index published by Web of Science. Don’t panic if you are a 1st year PhD student without much data yet, as submitting a research plan is enough. During the abstract submission process, you can choose to present only a poster or also apply for a scientific short talk during one of the sessions.

Details of the abstract submission procedure for FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference are available from the abstract submission portal, which is accessible once you start a new registration, but we give you an overview of the abstract submission guidelines here:

  • Abstracts must be submitted in English with consistent American or British English spelling.
  • Each participant can only submit one abstract.
  • Changes to the abstract after submission will not be considered.
  • The abstract should be at max. 250 words and should not include citations, figures, tables, or other illustrations.

Finally, grow your skills and your network

Knowing how to organize scientific events and communicate research to a wide audience are key skills for young scientists. The FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference series provides a way to develop those skills in a dynamic, fun and rewarding environment. Attending the conference will give you an insight into how the young event organizers pulled the event together, from planning the program and inviting the speakers to designing the public engagement activities and career workshops. Be inspired by them and – who knows? – you could be organizing your own conference soon!

Do not miss the opportunity to attend the 1st FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference and be part of a growing network of young researchers in the molecular life sciences!
