The FEBS Journal's editors regularly attend this yearly event, and we have last-minute tips and tricks that will help you savour everything this exciting event has to offer.

  1. Set Clear Goals. Are you attending to learn new techniques, network with peers, meet your heroes, initiate new collaborations, or showcase your work? All of the above? Having clear intentions will guide your actions so you don't miss the unmissable but also keep your stamina up until the end.
  2. Plan, plan, plan. Study the conference program and pick the sessions that align with your goals. Follow FEBS on social media to keep up with the cool things, and don’t forget to check out special sessions and the social programme! Don’t forget to budget some time for rest, too.
  3. Network, network, network. The social side of a conference is just as important as the science. Engaging with colleagues at large conferences can feel intimidating, regardless of which career stage you are in. And especially so if you are attending solo! But it’s important to remember that a lot of people with be in the same situation. Approaching people, even if only to remark on how tasty the coffee is, can lead to long-lasting friendships and collaborations. And you may even get to speak to your heroes (including a few Nobel prize winners if this is your jam!) or discover new career opportunities.
  4. Meet the Editors! (we’re a friendly bunch). Visit the FEBS Press booth in the Exhibition hall for an informal chat with The FEBS Journal Editors, as well as our colleagues from FEBS Letters, Molecular Oncology and FEBS OpenBio. You will learn about the journals and their activities, and you can book a one-to-one session with an Editor to discuss your research and potential submission.
  5. Prioritise Your Well-Being. Conferences can be intense, so it’s important to check in with yourself. Schedule breaks to decompress and reenergise. Remember, it’s okay to step out for a breather and return refreshed and ready to engage!
  6. Explore Maastricht. As well as hosting the FEBS congress, Maastricht is also a beautiful city and a convergence point of Dutch, Belgian, French and German cultures. Take a stroll across the Maas (Meuse) river into the old city, soak up some contemporary art at the Bonnefanten museum just minutes from the Congress venue or cool off along the leafy waterfront. Take some time to soak up what this remarkable city has to offer.

Bonus tip: If you're looking for some exciting papers to read on your journey to Maastricht, be sure to check out our Biochemistry & Beyond collections!

Enjoy the conference!
