This Congress, organized by the Spanish Society of Biochemistry (SEB, current SEBBM), represented an important contribution of the international research community to Spanish biochemistry, largely thanks to the work of our founding partners, led by Alberto Sols and Severo Ochoa.
The VI FEBS Congress was a success, both for the number of attendees and for the quality of the conferences and symposia scheduled on biosynthesis of macromolecules, enzymatic action mechanisms, biochemical evolution and molecular neurology, among other topics. It was mentioned in all the main newspapers of the time. One of the curiosities concerning the event is that the famous Spanish painter Salvador Dalí was in charge of illustrating the Congress´s poster and programme.
The number of participants was approximately 2,200. Among them, the active participation of eight Nobel Prizes should be highlighted: Ernst B. Chain (England), Carl F. Cori (United States), Sir Hans A. Krebs (England), Fritz Lipmann (United States), Feodor Lynen (Germany), Severo Ochoa (Spain), Frederick Sanger (England) and Hugo Theorell (Sweden), in addition to the most famous national and international personalities of the Biochemistry of the time (Grande Covián, Grísolía, Oparin, Oró, Sols, Wyman and a long etc.). This fact not only has no precedent in Spain, but also exceeds the precedents of the previous European Congresses.
We are working on several activities to commemorate this historical event for the development of the Spanish Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. For further information please visit the Madrid´s 2019 SEBBM Congress website:
