When an "essential" gene is disabled, what would the cell do?  Just die, or else?  Just gave a talk last week on our yet-to-be published research on this seemingly "nonsense" question in the light of experimental evolution at the College of Life Science, National Taiwan University.  Our arguably provocative view is that essential gene loss may even pave a way for genome evolution.
