Since its founding in 1964, FEBS has grown to more than 30,000 members across 39 biochemistry and molecular biology societies in Europe and neighbouring regions, providing a platform for scientific exchange. FEBS Letters celebrated FEBS's 60th anniversary in 2024 with a writing contest focused on participants' visions of scientific societies in the future.
The winning essay by Yussuf Ali (Jagiellonian University, Poland), published in the Scientists' Forum of FEBS Letters, considers a future in which technology enables FEBS to transcend geographical and disciplinary boundaries through digital laboratories and AI-guided networking. Ali also considers the interface of science and society, proposing greater focus on community engagement within academia and beyond, and on the broader social impact of scientific inquiry.
Read Ali's full essay in Issue 24 of FEBS Letters, alongside an editorial by Managing Editor Dr. Duncan Wright that reflects on recurring themes across entries and on the need for outreach to young researchers.
We are also pleased to share three honourable mentions by Kannan Govindaraj (University of Twente), Kellie Horan (University of Edinburgh), and Vishwadeep Mane (Indian Institute of Science).
The Scientists' Forum is a unique series from FEBS Letters that features news articles, interviews or letters to the editors showcasing researchers' perspectives on science and society. The Scientists' Forum has presented commentary on science policy, ethics, art, communication and industry.
