Richard Perham Prize 2024 – Winners announced!

The 2024 Richard Perham Prize was awarded to co-first authors Matteo Brindisi and Luca Frattaruolo, and to co-corresponding authors Federica Sotgia, Michael P Lisanti and Anna Rita Cappello for their remarkable article titled “New Insights into Cholesterol-Mediated ERRα Activation in Breast Cancer Progression and Pro-Tumoral Microenvironment Orchestration”.
In this study, Brindisi, Frattaruolo and colleagues unveil powerful insights into the connection between high cholesterol levels and breast cancer aggressiveness. They reveal how elevated cholesterol activates the ERRα pathway, driving the process of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. their findings pave the way for deeper insights into the tumour microenvironment, particularly in triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive and hard-to-treat forms. With breast cancer remaining the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women globally, these findings aid in the pursuit of more effective therapies that have the potential to save lives. You can read more about it in the editorial in Issue 23 (volume 291) of the FEBS Journal.
The FEBS Journal’s Richard Perham Prize, now in its 20th year, is awarded annually to the authors of an outstanding research article published in The FEBS Journal during the previous calendar year. The €5000 prize is split between first authors Matteo Brindisi and Luca Frattaruolo.
Additionally, Matteo Brindisi will deliver a plenary lecture about the work at the upcoming FEBS congress in Istanbul in 2025. (it's going to be fantastic, come along!).
We hope everyone will join us in congratulating Matteo Brindisi, Luca Frattaruolo, Marco Fiorillo, Vincenza Dolce, Federica Sotgia, Michael P Lisanti, Anna Rita Cappello and their colleagues for their outstanding work!
