FEBS Letters is proud to inaugurate a new article series centering patient advocacy with an interview with the Lily Foundation, a UK charity leading the fight against mitochondrial disease.

We spoke with founder Liz Curtis MBE, Head of Patient Programmes Katie Waller, and Research Manager Maria O'Hanlon, PhD about the Foundation's aims, achievements and activities.

FEBS Letters has a long history of publishing new findings in mitochondrial biology. We published a Special Issue on mitochondrial disorders in 2021, and two years later opened a Special Section on mitochondrial biology to disseminate and expedite the latest research in this crucial field.

We hope that this article will help bridge the gap between researchers and patients and remind our readers of the human face behind mitochondrial diseases.
