HDBMB YSF/FEBS Junior Section present Iva Tolic

The next talk of 2022 from the FEBS Junior Section is organized by HDBMB YSF, the Junior Section of the Croatian Society. Iva Tolić, from the Ruđer Bošković Institute, will talk about the mechanobiology of mitosis on 8 September at 19:00 (CET). Please help us share this post!

This talk is an activity from the FEBS Junior Section, an initiative set up by students and young researchers from some of the FEBS Constituent Societies. Each month a Junior Section from one of the participant Societies organizes an online event on either a research or a career topic. This September event is the ninth of their 2022 series and is an academic talk organised by HDBMB Young Scientists' Forum, the junior section of the HDBMB.

SpeakerIva Tolić, Ruđer Bošković Institute, Croatia
Topic: “Mechanobiology of mitosis and its role in mitotic fidelity
Time: 8 September, 19:00 (CET)

Abstract

Are all chromosomes equal during mitosis? Do they all segregate with the same accuracy? Does it matter where they come from? I will discuss these topics and show how the chromosomes located behind the spindle pole reach the spindle midplane and how this unfavorable starting position puts them at risk of mis-segregation. These biased segregation errors may contribute to the distinct aneuploid karyotypes observed in cancers and during embryonic development.

Dr. Iva Tolić is head of the Laboratory for Cell Biophysics at the Department of Molecular Biology, Ruđer Bošković Institute. Furthermore, she is a professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb and University of Split. Dr. Tolić secured millions of euros in research funds from a range of national and international funding agencies including the newest ERC Synergy Grant in the topic “Molecular origins of aneuploidies in healthy and diseased human tissues (Aneuploidy)”.
