The FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conference is an international, interdisciplinary 3-day event entirely organized by and for young researchers – PhD students and postdocs – from the molecular life sciences disciplines, bringing together up to 300 young participants from all over the world.

From experts in computational biology and artificial intelligence to pub talks with local citizens, and from useful job fairs to informal chats with renowned scientists, this event has been fully planned and organized by young scientists thinking about the research interests, career needs, and networking preferences of other young scientists.

The 2022 conference will be held from 16th November to 18th November at the Institute of Biomedicine Sevilla (IBiS) in the historical city of Seville in Spain. An optional city tour and a visit to the science museum the evening before the conference will provide an additional way to engage with this beautiful city.

What's on offer?

The conference promotes excellence in the molecular life sciences, linking science, career, and communication with the general public. To achieve this, the event comprise three main parts:

  • a scientific symposium that explores the latest research and pioneering developments in biomedical research, as well as give young scientists an opportunity to present their work through posters and short talks;
  • activities focused on employment opportunities, such as a science career day, career workshops, and a job fair;
  • and diverse outreach activities, delivered across the host city, to engage with the public and give all stakeholders a voice on biomedical discoveries.

Unlike most other conferences, the program is entirely devised by young researchers, who also plan and deliver the outreach activities that connect local citizens with students and the scientific community.

Supporting excellence

Initially ENABLE (European Academy for Biomedical Science) was funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 program and involved four renowned European Research Institutes: IRB Barcelona (Institute for Research in Biomedicine) in Spain; Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences in the Netherlands; Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research in Denmark; and SEMM (European School of Molecular Medicine) in Italy. From 2017, the institutes took turns to host the events in their respective cities, though the last one, which was due to happen in Milan, Italy, was delivered online in 2021 instead.

The previous events have been a success and in 2021 FEBS and IUBMB decided to support the initiative for a further four years, thus guaranteeing the continuity of these exciting events until 2025. FEBS and IUBMB had already funded travel grants at the previous events and will continue to offer them for the next round of conferences. Students and young researchers from the four original institutions continue to be involved in the planning and delivery of the events, supporting the organizers at the new host institution.

Your host for the event

For the first of these newly branded FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE conferences, the Institute of Biomedicine Sevilla (IBiS) was selected after a call was put out for new institutions to host the event. IBiS is a young and multidisciplinary biomedical research center, created in 2006 within the complex that houses the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital, a hub of high-level care, education and research. IBiS carries out fundamental research at the molecular and cellular level with a view to promote the rapid transfer of knowledge to the clinical setting, while also improving the quality of clinical and epidemiological research.

Technological innovation has promoted a remarkable development in our understanding of physiological and pathological states. This has inspired the title 'The perfect tandem: How technology expands the frontiers of biomedicine' for the FEBS-IUBMB-ENABLE 2022 conference. The event will bring together biomedicine with the latest technologies, to show how knowledge is translated from bench to bedside in order to help patients.

The conference will highlight the latest discoveries in fields such as neurobiology, oncology, immunology, personalized medicine, and computational biology. It will explore a wide range of cutting-edge research techniques, as well as illustrate the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration among researchers to foster scientific discoveries. Importantly, it will also feature exciting debates and discussions with the general public.

Eight renowned keynote speakers from different fields will share their expertise and experience in four sessions across several topics:

  • Computational biology and Artificial intelligence session, with Prof. Mihaela Van Der Schaar from University of Cambridge and Prof Elena Papaleo Technical from University of Denmark
  • Clinical and translational biomedicine session, with Dr. Laura Cancedda from Italian Institute of Technology and Prof. Petter Brodin from Karolinska Institute
  • Fundamental biology session, with Prof. José Lòpez Barneo from Institute of Biomedicine of Seville and Dr. Daphne Cabianca from Institute of Functional Epigenetics (Munich)
  • Innovation session, with Prof. César De La Fuente from University of Pennsylvania and Prof. Matteo Iannacone from San Raffaele Scientific Institute (Milan)
