Career heterogeneity in the life sciences – A Biobio Junior Section event

As part of the FEBS 60th Anniversary Constituent Society outreach events, the Junior Section of the Biobio Society, in Finland, have organized a hybrid event to celebrate the variety of career options in the life sciences. All junior scientists are invited! Please share this post with them.

Life is a beautifully complex subject to study and so are the career paths of people within the field, displaying equal diversity and showing that the seemingly simple and straightforward answers are often not the correct ones.

In this hybrid event, organized by the Junior Section of the Biobio Society  for the 29 October 2024, and kindly supported by the FEBS 60th Anniversary Constituent Society outreach events, we want to showcase and celebrate the different opportunities to spend in one’s career. We have invited speakers from diverse roles to discuss and share a few learnings from their successes and challenges throughout their professional journey.

In the center of the discussion will be a dialogue between our panelists and the audience, mediated by the questions of the attending junior scientists, and moderated by Anja Hartewig, the current chair of the Biobio Junior Section.

In the first part, Emma Raitoharju, Academy Research Fellow at Tampere University, Suvi Haimi, Co-founder of Sulapac, Helena Lähdekorpi, Innovation Specialist at Tampere University, and Stina Roth, Medical Leader, Immunology at Novartis, will answer questions about their career paths.

But how do I make sure my career will have an impact if it cannot be measured by an impact factor? And which role can organizations such as FEBS have in the shaping of my future? How do we work together with politics to implement policies?

To answer these questions, we will have a second panel with Irene Diaz-Moreno, Chair of the FEBS Career Young Scientists Committee and Professor at the University of Seville as well as Mario Brandenburg, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Education and Research.

While we do not know the questions asked in advance, we do hope to know the outcome – inspired junior scientists, ready to continue their career journey, which will hopefully lead them to contributing to the next 60 years of FEBS!

The event will take place in a hybrid mode, at Tampere University and online via Zoom. All junior scientists (including all bachelor’s students up to PostDocs), irrespective of their country of residence, are invited to join.
