Attending the HFP2024 FEBS Advanced Course as a student

I attended the FEBS Advanced Course on Molecular Mechanisms of Host-Pathogen Interactions and Virulence in Human Fungal Pathogens (HFP2024) from 18–24 May 2024, in La Colle sur Loup, France. The course focused on the current state-of-the-art knowledge of the biochemical, molecular and genetic mechanisms of fungal pathogenesis
When my supervisor, Prof. Attila Gácser, suggested I attend this course and encouraged me to apply for the FEMS Youth Travel Grant, (from the Federation of European Microbiological Societies, the course's main co-sponsor) two thoughts immediately came to mind. First, I was excited at the prospect of being surrounded by advanced researchers and experts in the field, knowing it would be an incredible learning experience. Second, I felt uncertain about my chances of being selected for the grant and the conference, given that I am just starting my research career. Fortunately, I not only had the opportunity to hear presentations from experts but was also selected for the travel grant. While this might seem small to others, it was a huge privilege for me.
This event turned out to be a great opportunity for me to be exposed to a variety of research projects that are significantly more advanced than my own. Listening to the presentations gave me a deeper understanding of host and fungal interactions and introduced me to new methods and the latest technologies. This exposure has been particularly valuable, as it has encouraged me to reevaluate and refine my own research from a more informed perspective. I have been inspired to adopt new strategies and set higher standards for my work.
During my poster presentation, I was genuinely touched by the interest shown in my research. I appreciated the way people engaged with my research ideas, offered constructive feedback, and showed such enthusiasm. It is crucial for researchers to participate in conferences like this, as they provide a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and professional growth.
Conferences like this also introduce us to funding opportunities for researchers. One particular example was when Ioannis Tsagakis from the FEBS Press highlighted the opportunities that FEBS offers. He explained that if I want to learn a new skill, I can find a laboratory or institute that specializes in that area and apply to FEBS for funding. These initiatives are essential for researchers, as they provide opportunities to learn new skills and improve the quality of their research without worrying too much about expenses.
Personally, I always advocate for helping others reach their potential whenever possible. Supporting someone to strengthen their skills, gain confidence, and expand their professional network is incredibly fulfilling. It not only helps individuals grow but also develops the entire research community.
I am especially grateful to have received the FEMS Youth Travel Fund and the support of HCEMM (Hungarian Centre of Excellence for Molecular Medicine) in covering my expenses. I am also grateful to my supervisor for always recognizing my potential and ensuring I get opportunities like this FEBS Advanced course to gain new perspective and build a strong foundation for a successful research career.
Hopefully I can attend the next HFP2024 FEBS Advanced Course once again!
