Over the last century, tremendous advances in the molecular biosciences have enabled the improvement of global health standards, as well as the development of alternative approaches to support progress in a more sustainable way. An inspiring example is the work of Dr Irina Borodina, a Lithuanian Chemical Engineer with a PhD in biotechnology from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where she is today a Professor in Yeast Metabolic Engineering. Borodina leads a laboratory at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability at DTU, and is also a co-founder and CSO of the biotech company BioPhero, which produces insect pheromones for environmentally friendly pest control. In 2019, Irina Borodina received the prestigious Women Innovator Award from the European Innovation Council.

In this Scientists' Forum article, we interview Dr Irina Borodina and discuss sustainable approaches to produce chemicals, drugs and natural products, such as making use of yeast cell factories.
