Maybe this talk has opened open doors …. But hopefully maybe not all doors. So introspect your own lab book and see what you can change for yourself …. But remember science is team work … today its a www = world wide work!
Indeed, working as a team is about “communicating”!
Dear young bold and brave scientists,
Your lab book is your “log” book. It should allow you and others to know exactly what you are doing, what was done, how it was done, and what ALL the outcomes were. Finally, offer your view of what each step meant and then WHAT NEXT should be. Indeed, science is an ever-ongoing process, involving you but many other scientists.
Scientific research is about reconstituting a gigantic puzzle of how the world, universe work. In biochemistry, we are trying to understand, a little corner of this gigantic puzzle of the living world, i.e. how life forms function, have evolved, and evolve. In normal as well as in the pathological “badly or non-functioning” conditions.
In our endeavors, we are all striving to contribute small pieces to this gigantic puzzle. Your lab book allows you to contribute YOUR USEFUL piece to that puzzle … If the information is complete, then that piece of puzzle, your contribution, has chances of being correct!
Keeping your lab book is probably the most overlooked soft skill that our universities deliver to you in the course of your curricula. However, keeping a lab book, as a scientist, will be a lifelong requirement and may have significant impact on moments of your scientific career.
So, introspect your lab book in the light of this modest attempt to attract your attention to this overlooked and underrated “skill.”
In my talk at the 24thd YSF in Sapanca, I hope to have made you grasp what are the important reasons for your lab book not only for you but also for others, because science is teamwork.
During the workshops, I have attempted to bring your attention to the practical issues that you must pay attention to and implement in your lab books to the point of it being a “scientific reflex” as important as choosing the right controls in an experiment.
I will ask the organizers to make the talk and workshop slides, taht are in pdf files available as soon as possible.
With that, I wish you all to succeed in your future lives and to be happy and peaceful persons. Hoping this may be of help to you to have fruitful and happy careers in your forthcoming science lives.
